could be, but isn't the kernel all loaded to memory at run time, thus
cannot be corrupted (not by HDD glitches anyway) ?

never happened to me before, and I'm not intrested in it happening again,
as this machinve is of some importance to the Kibutz. I didn't try to
compile ScryMUD again, if that's what your asking. maybe after I collect
enough courage, I might try that again.... ;-)
oh, I did compile two other MUD daemons since, both were about the same
level of complexity as far as I understand, and both compiled nicely and
ran (and still running) nicely w/o problems. none of them however required
me to compile them with egcs, as Scry did (though I did compiled them with
egcs.  I have version 2.90.27 980315 - is it important ?)
