I remember meeting "Roger" once here in town. Like many, I was first introduced to Dr. Payne's work with whales by way of listening to the Paul Winter Consort's musical overlay of the recordings from Dr. Payne's "Songs of the Humpback Whales".
I'm taking heed of the quote in his obituary; “It’s time for us to once again listen to the whales — and, this time, to do it with every bit of empathy and ingenuity we can muster so that we might possibly understand them.” and listening now, I am feeling it again! And, also NYT music critic Donal Henahan's assertion that "“If, after hearing this (preferably in a dark room), you don’t feel you have been put in touch with your mammalian past,” Mr. Henahan wrote, “you had best give up listening to vocal music.” Agreed! ~Jai On Thu, Jun 15, 2023 at 8:22 PM Sara Mattes <samat...@gmail.com> wrote: > Roger Payne, once of Lincoln, has left us. > In his lifetime, he opened our eyes, ears and hearts to these great > creatures. > The world was changed, for the better, by his life. > > > > > <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7YDFUTaODE&t=15s> > “Tower Whales” - Songs of the Humpback Whale > <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7YDFUTaODE&t=15s> > youtube.com <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7YDFUTaODE&t=15s> > <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7YDFUTaODE&t=15s> > > > > ------ > Sara Mattes > > > > > -- > The LincolnTalk mailing list. > To post, send mail to Lincoln@lincolntalk.org. > Browse the archives at https://pairlist9.pair.net/mailman/private/lincoln/ > . > Change your subscription settings at > https://pairlist9.pair.net/mailman/listinfo/lincoln. > >
