Back in the day, a word would go out and folks would convene at Valley Pond, with food and libations. Bonfires were lit, chairs set up and some would actually venture onto the ice for a spirited, intergenerational game of ice hockey. Others would tentatively make their way around the ice. A straight-backed chair was kept on the ice to proved support for those new to those narrow blades on the feet.
Others simply sat, pond-side, imbibed ( or not) and enjoyed the warmth of fellowship. We have not had ice to support much these past years. That should not deter us from the other components of the gathering. ------ Sara Mattes > On Dec 22, 2022, at 2:14 PM, Susan Taylor <[email protected]> wrote: > > Just for fun, share your favorite stories/memories of ice skating in Lincoln! > I remember thick black ice on Beaver Pond in the 1990s when we could see fish > swimming under our skates!
