Hard-wired detectors “ talk “ to each other.
If one sounds, all do.
I am not sure there are any battery only that do.

This is key if there is an issue detected in a remote area of the house- an 
attic, basement, garage, etc.
You certainly would want an early notification if a small fire was starting in 
any such location.

As for back-up batteries, given Lincoln’s notorious history with power outages, 
backup batteries seem a common sense choice.
