I had a feeling my observation wasn't original. Also, I rather dodged the issue of whether convert-ly and the docs should enforce/encourage a change to the proposed usage. Speaking just for myself, changing of default reference pitch makes no difference to me, as I always use an explicit reference pitch. But I would not want to have convert-ly change any \relative's with explicit reference pitches in my input files.
