I can confirm that 2.16.0, at least, works with 10.7.4.
As far as building the binaries, however, my experience has been negative.
I
have been unable to compile LilyPond on my machine, either manually or
using
homebrew. I have reported the issue on the devel list
(http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/lilypond-devel/2012-09/msg00452.html),
and hopefully one of the wizards will take a few moments to examine it as
it
is reproducible and not limited to my machine.
As far as I'm aware, no-one has replied to your post about compiling on Mac,
because as a general rule, we don't expect this to be needed. Most people
developing on lilypond use Ubuntu which we know will compile the binary.
