I've noticed this for a while with lilypond-user - like you, it's one
of the minority of the mailing lists I'm on that *doesn't* use the
subject prefix convention, so it's much less easy to do an
eyeball-filter/scan as you describe.

Colin's suggestion of filter rules to put things in different folders
is fine, but that approach just doesn't work too well for me. I prefer
to read (or at least scan) everything as it comes in - if the email's
automatically sent off to another folder, I find I can just forget to
check that folder.
Just had a look at the options available in TB rule-triggered actions:

Move message to
Copy message to
Forward message to
Reply with template
Mark as read ( left unread by default)
Add star
Set priority to
Tag message
and others.

You can probably set up quite a sophisticated filtering system with a few mouse clicks: have some messages go to a folder (the folder name gets bolded while it contains unread mail, which is the visual cue to look in the folder), a subset of those messages could light up in a category relevant colour, others get copied to folder 2, still others get forwarded and deleted. The whole thing would become a very fast way of scanning your mail for noteworthy (oops, I meant LilyPond!) related stuff.
