Seems a bit overly complicated for adding something so simple don't ya think?
From that comment, I can see you don't actually appreciate the complexity of computer music notation. If you're interested in reading about how difficult it is to do what Lilypond does — and what Finale, Sibelius, etc., do to an inferior degree — there are literally dozens of great papers, theses, and articles about what's involved.
