yes, this case lilypond is producing a slur that isn't legible.
But I think even when lilypond's slurs do look like the score there should be, they are ambiguous when crossing a system break and it should be possible for the user to tweak that ambiguity away - maybe just an option to slant each part of the slur?

(I think the issue of legibility to performer is an important aspect when developing a notation software, not just does it look like the traditional pocket scores - which aren't used for performance. But thats just my perspective, I guess)
