It should work (assuming that you looked at the version of the Regression
Tests document corresponding to your version of LilyPond).
You haven't told what operating system you have, but in most LilyPond
installations, all the example files of the Regression Test document are
also
available locally, for example in the directory
/usr/share/doc/lilypond/input/regression/
on a Linux machine or
C:\Program Files\lilypond\usr\share\doc\lilypond\input\regression\
on a Windows machine. You can always try to search for a file named
stencil-hacking.ly and try that one, to make sure that you don't get any
problems when you copy-paste from the web browser.

Well, sort of. See the example called "stencil-hacking.ly" in the
Regression Test document. If you search the mailing list archives, you
may find more information.
I copied & pasted all the code marked as "ly snippet" in the example to a
new .ly file, but the .pdf output still has no parentheses. Should I have
copied the first section to some other file?
