Thankyou for helpful responses from Knute, Brian, David and Saul. This may all be an issue with windows 11 on my new dell laptop.
I removed everything and reinstalled to c:\program files (x86)\lilypond-2.24.4 I associated .ly files with lilypond, and set the path to the lilypond directory as above. SET in cmd didn't recognise this until I rebooted. I ran convert-ly e .. from the folder with the lilypond scripts, but it reported that convert-ly is not recognised .... I repeated that after copying a convert-ly.px to the scripts file, but with the same result. I also tried compiling a script, but despite the path and the default association, it just suggested a list of apps to open the .ly file 'just once', and then looped without achieving anything. I repeated the whole process, reinstalling to c:\program files rather then (x86), but still no change. HOWEVER If I use Frescobaldi, convert works properly, though from 2.23.12 there is a change to the plainchant engraver, and it reports errors when I compile, though it says it has compiled successfully. No doubt I can sort these out. I thought it hadn't produced any output, but it just took a couple of minutes! So I can't really ask for any more advice, though I really don't want to use Frescobaldi as I prefer to type straight into notepad. If you have any more thoughts, I'll let you know how I get on..
