Right. The alternative, undocumented solution is to *both* add the directory with -I *and* put at the top of the file #(ly:font-config-add-directory "/path/to/cadence/otf/") https://gitlab.com/lilypond/lilypond/-/merge_requests/1957 was a merge request to improve this situation but it didn't really pan out.
