This is more general than specific, but I've found that using the same distribution as one of the major developers works pretty well. That is, when you have a problem, you can get an answer pretty fast on the list. I think Debian or some fedora is the right answer these days. My personal answer is that I started with RedHat, moved to Mandrake because it was configured out-of-the-box more like what I wanted, and then got tired of the RPM dependancy hell and moved to Debian Unstable. For me, apt-get and dpkg work a lot better than urpmi and rpm did in 2003.
