Regarding the English, some strict grammarians might scoff with sentences
that end with prepositions.  However, this is the way most people talk, so
I wouldn't rule out that formulation on that basis.

Here are some variations to consider that are more grammatical:

Could not find a preceding note or chord to which to attach this slur
Slur is not preceded by a note or chord
Slur lacks a preceding note or chord to which to attach
