Rename the directory from 'pfa' to 'type1' and rerun texhash. Unfortunately, some names in the directory structure are fixed, look in the file pointed out by kpsewhich texmf.cnf to learn more.

However, I get the message about ec-fonts not being available. I downloaded them, but how do I let lilypond know about their location?

Jan, I tried this. My TEXMF environment variable is:
{/usr/local/coop/share/lilypond/2.4.0,{!!/u/victor/texmf,!!/usr/local/share/texmf,!!/usr/share/texmf}}
and in the /u/victor/texmf/ls-R (just an excerpt)
./fonts: pfa tfm
./fonts/pfa: ecbi10.pfa ecbi12.pfa ecbi14.pfa ecbi17.pfa ecbi8.pfa ecbi9.pfa ecbx10.pfa ecbx12.pfa ecbx5.pfa ecbx6.pfa ecbx7.pfa ecbx8.pfa ecbx9.pfa eccc10.pfa eccc12.pfa ecrm10.pfa ecrm12.pfa ecrm17.pfa ecrm5.pfa ecrm6.pfa ecrm7.pfa ecrm8.pfa ecrm9.pfa ecsc10.pfa ecsc12.pfa ecsc14.pfa ecsc9.pfa ecsl10.pfa ecsl12.pfa ecsl8.pfa ecsl9.pfa ecss10.pfa ecss12.pfa ecss17.pfa ecss8.pfa ecss9.pfa ecssdc10.pfa ecti10.pfa ecti12.pfa ecti7.pfa ecti8.pfa ecti9.pfa ectt10.pfa ectt12.pfa ectt8.pfa ectt9.pfa
yet
kpsewhich ecrm10.pfa yields nothing. Any suggestions?
Victor
