If you want to learn more about how this works, read the comments
in the file pointed to by
kpsewhich texmf.cnf

There's also some documentation if you run 'info kpathsea'

If you want to check the default value of TEXMF, do
unset TEXMF
kpsexpand \$TEXMF

Yes, I do

I definitely agree, but it DIDN'T work until I did this. I couldn't
find the documentation of what the value of $TEXMF means. What are
the !! for? In any case, until I gave that definition, things didn't
work. For example kpsewhich ecrb10.pfa

gave nothing (i.e. a blank line), until I set TEXMF.

Mats, Well, I got things working. It seems that what was
necessary, was for me to put the line export
TEXMF="{$HOME/texmf,/usr/share/texmf}" in my .bashrc. After I did
that, then lilypond could find the ec fonts in my $HOME/texmf. Now
lilypond 2.4.0 seems to work. Thanks again.
