I can't recommend a good IDE to use, because I don't use one with LilyPond:
a basic text editor and git grep is sufficient for me.  QtCreator has been
recommended to me, though, and maybe others could chime in with their
preferences.

Development is made *considerably* easier by LilyDev: see
http://lilypond.org/doc/v2.19/Documentation/contributor/lilydev

Whenever you're able to help, whatever you can do will be appreciated!
