If you are using Macintosh OS X, Jaguar or later, try "Mighty Midi"- versiontracker.com should have it.
It's a bit buggy on Panther, but it gives you lots of control and does read the tempo.

I am but it doesn't work, at least when the MIDI file is played from QuickTime.
From what I've understood, it is a bug in lilypond.
