You're quite right; it does. In that case, you could have a look at input/test/beam-auto*.ly to see how to change this behaviour. Then you could have one line at the beginning of your score to set it up, and then omit all the -[ -] from the rest. Of course, it probably isn't worth doing that now, but it might be good to do in the future.
