If you read the section about "Horizontal spacing" in the manual, you can
find some parameters to tweak, to get what you want. Another solution is
to scale the durations: c\longa*1/8
Indeed this is the drawback for ancient music at the moment, and there
are a couple of
ways how to tweak the spacing manually. Another way is to set the width
of the incipit
manually so the spaces get "squashed" smaller. You will have the same
problem, though, with
the other approach as well.
