Great!  Is this between staves only or is it applied everywhere in
lilypond?  In case it is the latter it might be a good idea to add
skyline support to the lilypond glyphs themselves, this is, adding new
SFNT tables (say, `hsky' and `vsky') to the fonts which holds skyline
information for each glyph.

Can Fontforge generate such outline information? I think there are not that many glyphs where skyline spacing is really useful, except for the flat and natural accidental.
