Hmmm, but then if a non-automake project calls AC_LIB_LTDL, when they run autoreconf, it will run automake -a :-( Can AC_LIB_LTDL call a subset of AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE's internals, so that the Automake generated Makefile.in will work, *and* autoreconf won't get confused?
