Hmm... not what I had imagined, but point taken. This was the only failure of this kind in the particular configure script I was looking at, but I shall bear this in mind if I run into anything similar in future. Is there a trivial way to specify cumulative flags at make-time, as opposed to an override? Nobody's pointed it out before on other lists, but you're right. I might have a word and see if I can get a less draconian signature for mailing list use.
