I think you are over-reaching here: scorpius pturmel ~ $ xdpyinfo | egrep "(dimensions|dots per inch)" dimensions: 3600x1080 pixels (905x272 millimeters) resolution: 101x101 dots per inch In fact, in several years of daily linux use, I've always had a reality-based DPI in X on single monitor systems, and lately, on my dual-monitor setups.
