Description:
# Bundled extension registration prevents Hunspell, Libhyphen and MyThes from
loading in an existing user profile
**Product:** LibreOffice
**Version:** 26.2.6.3 (x86_64)
**Build ID:** 8221e31b3ac356a1623c672912a3d2b492f7e3d1
**Operating system:** Windows 10 x86_64, Build 19045
**UI rendering:** Skia/Raster, VCL: win
**Locale:** de-DE
**UI language:** de-DE
**Date of investigation:** November 4, 2026
## Problem description
In an existing, heavily customized LibreOffice user profile, three language
services disappeared from Tools → Options → Languages and Locales → Writing
Aids:
- Hunspell SpellChecker
- Libhyphen Hyphenator
- MyThes Thesaurus
Only the Lightproof grammar checkers for Russian and English remained
available.
The German dictionary extension was still listed in the Extension Manager, but
attempting to use spell checking produced the message "No dictionary
available".
Restoring the personal dictionary (`standard.dic`) did not resolve the missing
language services.
## Investigation and test results
The original user profile was copied to a separate directory to allow testing
without affecting personal settings.
The following tests were performed:
1. **Safe Mode:** All three missing language services were available.
2. **Completely fresh user profile:** All three services were available.
3. **Copy of the affected profile:** All three services were missing.
4. **Regenerating registrymodifications.xcu:** Did not resolve the issue.
5. **Renaming user/uno_packages alone:** Did not resolve the issue.
6. **Renaming both user/extensions and user/uno_packages:** All three services
became available.
7. **Restoring the original uno_packages directory:** The services remained
available.
8. **Restoring the original extensions directory:** The services disappeared
again.
9. **Renaming only user/extensions/bundled:** All three services became
available again.
Finally, the same targeted change was applied to the original user profile.
The directory:
`user/extensions/bundled`
was renamed to:
`user/extensions/bundled_alt`
After restarting LibreOffice normally, Hunspell, Libhyphen and MyThes were
available and enabled again.
Spell checking was subsequently confirmed to work in Writer.
## Expected result
Installed language services should remain available after application restarts,
even when the existing user profile contains outdated or inconsistent
bundled-extension registration information.
## Actual result
The existing registration data under `user/extensions/bundled` apparently
prevented the three language services from loading.
Renaming this directory restored the missing services without requiring a
complete reset of the user profile.
## Possibly related observation
A custom Colibre SVG icon theme, installed through an OXT extension,
intermittently disappeared from the list of available icon themes despite
remaining visible in the Extension Manager.
This occurred several times.
It has not been established whether this behavior is related to the
language-service problem.
## Additional information
The specific file or registration entry responsible for the problem has not yet
been identified.
The issue was reproducible with the affected profile but did not occur with a
completely fresh profile.
A complete profile reset would have resulted in the loss of extensive
customizations, including macros, toolbar configurations, personal dictionaries
and custom icon assignments.
It may therefore be useful to investigate whether LibreOffice can detect and
regenerate inconsistent bundled-extension registration data automatically.
Screenshots documenting both the affected and restored states are available.
Thank you for your work on LibreOffice!
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Start LibreOffice with the affected user profile.
2. Open Tools > Options > Languages and Locales > Writing Aids.
3. Observe that Hunspell, Libhyphen and MyThes are missing.
4. Close LibreOffice and rename user/extensions/bundled to bundled_alt.
5. Restart LibreOffice with the same user profile.
6. All three language services are available again.
Actual Results:
Hunspell, Libhyphen and MyThes are missing from the available language modules.
Only the two Lightproof grammar checkers remain.
Renaming user/extensions/bundled restores all three services.
Expected Results:
All installed language services should remain available without requiring
manual intervention in the user profile.
Reproducible: Always
User Profile Reset: No
