Sure, but un/selecting items works then almost similar to just clicking the label and showing the status as highlighted or not. You just ensure that no accidental clicks change the selection. And in case of a multi-selection it would be easier to have a "All" checkbox (like in View > User Interface... > Toolbars: [/] Lock All.
