Hello Alexander,
My company recently completed what we believe is the first port of lftp to
the Unix side of IBM's OS/390 mainframe for a nearby insurance company. It
was not easy, but after the port we feel we are familiar enough with lftp
to consider offering select companies, particularly those in North America
and Europe, commercial support of the lftp package.
Obviously my first question has to do with licensing. It appears that lftp
is GNU licensed, which allows people to sell commercial support of open
source software as long as they continue to release their modifications to
the public as well. I would first like to confirm that lftp is indeed GNU
licensed.
Second, I wonder what commercial arrangements you might like to make
between yourself and our company. Although the GNU license would seem to
prohibit you from selling us any exclusive rights to lftp or even copies of
the software itself, we would likely be interested in employing your
services as a paid consultant and/or to put mention of our company as a
commercial supporter of your product on your web site.
Finally, I should ask what I can do to make the OS/390 version of lftp
public and thus carry out our open source duties under the GNU license.
Thank you again for writing lftp!
