Ah, that did it, thanks. I'd been looking through various Gnome preferences, figuring there'd be some way to tell gnome-session which locale to use. Didn't think to look in the login manager, but choosing "New Zealand English" appears to be the equivalent of LC_ALL=en_NZ.utf8. Simon.
