kmails, kate etc, although these apps are all in /opt/kde/bin.

Make sure you have the XDG_* variables set to include the /opt/kde
stuff. Then make sure you run update-desktop-database. If that doesn't
work, I don't really know because I'm totally unfamiliar with KDE.
