I think this question (and then the 'explanation' in a more recent message) is confusing everyone. I know that I can't make heads or tails from either the question above, or the explanation. Most would find that the "appropriate path to patch the kernel" is to download a kernel tarball (of the desired kernel version), compile it, and install the resulting kernel image. Why mess around with any patches at all?
