Actually, that could be an explanation for a different behavior of the 
32 bit VM:
for 32 bit, I use Debian 6.0, which has a fairly old kernel (2.6.32 series)
while all the 64 bit distros I use have a much more current one (3.8.4 
on Arch, 3.2 series en Debian, for example). Could be that the problem 
shows up only with an older kernel...
