Given the noises upstream were making when they originally announced the systemd/udev source merge about the ability to still build and install udev standalone this did somewhat surprise me. That sounds good; from the scale of the changes that were being discussed a week or so ago, I think maintaining a patch of that size would be fraught with maintenance headaches. If the patch is just adding a standalone Makefile, it should be much easier to handle as there won't be any merge conflicts or the like.
