 To Armin: the systems all *built* without .la files, it was only
during later upgrades (and, for different packages on each
architecture) that I had difficulties.  But nowadays I don't try to
keep desktop systems in use for more than a year.

 I think there was also a problem with ImageMagick (probably in the
fedora bugzilla) because it couldn't find the delegates to actually
do anything useful.  ISTR that even fedora reinstated .la files for
that package.
