I never had any confusion on that issue, because I prefer to build everything in /usr/local/src/ anyway, and keep the tar files someplace else entirely (currently /lsrc, because it's short to type, which means I can't just copy and paste all the "patch" commands, but such is my cross to bear--and yes, I create /usr/local/src in the LFS mount before the step where I'm supposed to create the directory structure, but I'm weird and probably a bad example to all.).
You do have to assume SOME level of base competency for a group of people who are brave enough to attempt compiling their own operating system from scratch. They may be newcomers to compiling operating systems, but are unlikely to be newcomers to Linux and command-line tools (unless they enjoy pain, and there's no helping that). It only causes me momentary confusion when I un-tar a package, and the directory it unpacks into has a name completely different from the tarfile. I've never confused the tree of the package itself with the directory I put it in. If changing the name is deemed a good idea, I'd vote for "packages." --Victor Wren On 5/4/2012 5:45 AM, Andrew Benton wrote: > Hello All, > > There's a rather ill natured thread on LFS Support at the moment called > Chapter 5 questions.
