My bad - I *did* include the sed, and I'd successfully built coreutils-8.16 using the books as at 19th and 25th April without any failures. So, I'd mentally marked it as a problem in jhalfs. As I said originally, this was a new failure for me. And also, the sed doesn't seem to fix it.
