I rebooted to LFS 7.1, so that the only kernel I was running was that of 
LFS (3.2.6
actually). And guess what ?
No error in m4 tests. What I did:
boot newly built LFS 7.1
cd /sources
tar xvf m4-xxx
cd m4-xxx
./configure --prefix=/usr
make -j5
make check

Resulted in "All 116 tests passed. 14 tests were skipped".

If you have any suggestion for further tests, please do... I am sorry: 
"it works for me"
is never very helpful.
