Neither do I, with either OpenSuse 12.1 (3.1 kernel) or Debian testing 
(3.2 kernel). I mean building
m4 with tools from those distros.

As far as I understand, you mean m4 in chapter 6. Normally, this build 
is insulated from the host
(except kernel), so it should behave the same for any host? Actually, 
even in chapter 5, it should use the tools previously built, and not 
those of the host. So if you do not see the error in this case, it cannot be
a missing patch in glibc.

Trying ICA right now, which should give : LFS chapter 6 from LFS tools, 
then LFS chapter 6 from LFS chapter 6, all with host kernel. Result in a 
few hours... With 7.1 (without the sed, of course).
Then I can try to build m4 from the newly built LFS.
