First thing I personally look at when VMs are slower is disk slowdowns. 
It's always been the bottleneck on my machines. Writing to a massive 
file on the host's file system is going to incur overhead and slowdown. 
Having a separate drive available that can be directly accessed by the 
VM helps. Using solid state drives has also dramatically improved 
performance for me; it negated the performance hit.
