This is a continuation of a discussion that began on lfs-support.

I think that using the wiki is a great idea *once we have something to
put there.* I think that the first thing we need to do is update the
hint sans any of the "neat" stuff we've thought about. For example,
incorporating the scripted ability to make a directory an install
directory when a build fails. That ability needs to be tested and I'd
like to have a discussion about it. The discussion centers around
making every directory an install directory, which is the result of what
we're considering.

I believe in the "First Principle of LFS"--your distro, your rules. I
also firmly believe in the intended learning processes surrounding LFS.
I think that a lot of "improvements" come from experienced builders
who'd rather not spend their time copying, pasting and typing
"./configure --prefix=/usr, make, make install" until the cows come
home. And in regard to the package users system, I know that I find the
failed builds because of an install directory frustrating and tiresome.

Jhalfs is a good example of what I'm saying. If someone, not very
experienced, comes to LFS to build and uses jhalfs instead of "The
Book," what experience do they gain? Sure, they have a working basic
system, but now they're ready to move to BLFS possibly without the
refined skills necessary to do builds there. I think the same line of
thinking applies to package users. I think it's important, at the
beginning, to experience the frustration of failed builds and taking the
required steps to move on.

I've got some more ideas, but I've rambled on way to long in this one.
I think our first step is to update the hint. Bring it up to speed with
the changes that have occurred in LFS since it was written. I think we
should target the update to LFS-6.6 since that release is just around
the corner. Drew, you and I are currently building against LFS-SVN, so I
will take good notes too. Tim, are you building now too?

I won't be too close to this laptop until later this afternoon. What do
you both, or anybody else who is interested, think of all of this?

Thanks for reading the rambling.

Dan
