Let me answer that with an example. gcc-4.0.x and mysql 5.0.{16,18,19} produce problems. Mysql devs point to gcc since previous versions of gcc work. If this is indeed a compiler bug (which I do not yet know) then look at how long gcc-4.0.x has been in the book without anyone noticing this. A new glibc/gcc minor update combo should cook for at least 2-3 months, IMO. I really don't see what the fuss is with releasing 2.3.6/4.0.3. Fedora is the only distro I'm aware of using such versions. Anyway, with the merge of udev_update + squashing most of the current bugs, I'd say that a testing branch isn't far. If that happens, then trunk can move to 4.1.x/2.4.x without problem to allow that 2-3 month time period to start. From the time of merging udev_update, through bug squashing, branching, and a couple rc's, 6.2 should be in a releaseable state in 4-5 weeks. -- Archaic Want control, education, and security from your operating system?
