Ahhhhhh! I believe I have found the source of my difficulties. I got the
LiveCD in mid December, and downloaded the current book, 6.1.1.

Well, it turns out that the book talks about installing perl-5.8.7 in Ch-5. My
CD had 5.8.6! I had done a cut and paste from the book to build scripts for Ch
5 & 6, and that caused a little confusion I recall. I had to use the patch for
5.8.6 in the script, but when it was all finished, per the script, it went into
/lfs/tools/lib/perl/5.8.7/. Not good, since internally it has addresses for
.../5.8.6/!

The most recent date for the sources on the LiveCD was 7/6/05, and that seems
to correspond with book-6.1(.0), which I have now retrieved from the archive.
Now I guess I need to find a 6.1.0-6.1.1 changelog so I can have a clue what's
been changed, so which of my scripts might also be wrong.

May I suggest that in future releases the LiveCD also contains the book
relevant for each specific release?
