I'm guessing by me? Probably because we were still in the middle of discussing the udev, groups and passwd changes at the time, so I still thought there was a dependency between all 3 meaning that all of the changes had to go in at the same time. Sorry Jim, it sometimes takes a while for me to realise what's going on!
Incidentally, you'll see my rules file differs from yours, primarily where 'MODE="0660"' and 'NAME="%k"' have disappeared in mine. As these are the defaults in udev, I thought it best to remove them so as to emphasise what our rules files *are* manipulating.
