Ok, first, not all dance and electro music is as you suggest, in fact the vast majority of dance/trance music is original, if relatively simple. Having said that it's not that simple to write a hook, but I digress.. some artists choose to take the hook or a melody from an older classic, but just like you said 'wow' when you heard some older music with that familiar riff in and decide to investigate, well so it goes for modern examples too.
Second, a lot of dance music is very good and not only 'nicks' hooks etc from your beloved hirsute artistes, but also from the classical composers. Its horses for courses, sometimes I'm in a mood or place where trance music is cool, sometimes old school 80's, sometimes old school 70's, sometimes modern guitar-led bands. I personally think Status Quo were on the whole generic, repetitive and boring, yet they are a 2 lead guitar band. I also think scooter should be shot. I loved the Killers first album and they fused guitar rock with 80's style synths. Ultimately though I think Bob Moog was as 'punk', in his impact on music, as the Sex Pistols. Both changed the way the current generation looked at music, both said you don't need to be a classicly trained musician to make music, both opened the music biz to the masses. It just took a decade or so before synth's became cheap enough to be accessible to the younger generation, and of course the next big step were synths on computers, which made it affordable to virtually everyone. The internet is another 'punk' move, allowing people to make and now distribute/sell music without the need to get a record deal or please the Simon Cowells of this world. Basically, it's all good! Apart from scooter. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Tim Leslie Sent: 25 January 2007 15:27 To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [LU] non lu music What I am merely saying is that the modern dance scene is pants because rather than use those influences/themes/tunes/chords and create a worthy adaptation it's merely computer generated samples that are played over a dance beat. It's infinately inferior in musician (I'm not a musician BTW) terms and if you think it isn't ... I reckon you're living in cloud cuckoo land! ;-) The resurgence of bands that actually play their own instruments is a god send to me personally, The Raconteurs being my personal fave at the moment. _______________________________________________ the Leeds List is an unmoderated mailing list and the list administrators accept no liability for the personal views and opinions of contributors.
