Yup, but one other thing to remember is that getting a #12 hit these days probably involves selling 100 ringtones, the singles charts are virtually meaningless and redundant these days. Even the album charts are a pale imitation of what used to be, I remember reading that Prince Charming had pre-orders of something like 700,000 and they weren't guaranteed to go in at #1, these days you'll be #1 if you sell something like 40,000.
I sort of follow your train of thought, but unfortunately there were a few more manufactured artists before the punk days. The monkees spring to mind, but I also believe that Elvis, no less, was little more than a pop idol of the day - didn't write any music or lyrics, couldn't play anything but a few strums on the guitar. Blame it on him! Also, the original incarnation of the Sex Pistols actually had some musical skill about them, Steve Jones was (and is) a great guitarist. People just seem to associate Sex Pistols with Rotten's deliberately off key singing and Sid's nonexistent bass playing skills. Rotten had talent, Sid just looked right! -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Tim Leslie Sent: 25 January 2007 16:26 To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [LU] non lu music I constantly try and make sure I don't/haven't turned into 'an old fuddy duddy'!!! and try to appreciate all types of music and yes, of course for the sake of the argument, I was tarring it all with same brush so to speak. There is some excellent stuff in there if you look hard enough. I am simply of the opinion that 90% of these bands who simply bang together samples and make number 12 in the charts as Groove Major featuring Shaz Dexter, or whatever ... should infact be shot dead ... slowly if at all possible. As should ANYONE who makes that appalling stuff (And please god don't anyone argue the toss on this one) The Dutch seem to go mad about thats just played at 1,000 BPM with an overblown stylophone making the foreground noise! As for Scooter ... they're a new one to me, I must get into them if they're as good as you say!!!!! I do have a train of thought mind you that the root of all this Pap we have to put up with now (and by that I mean yer Pop Factor nonesense ;-)) is, infact, punks fault! > Ok, first, not all dance and electro music is as you suggest, in fact the > vast majority of dance/trance music is original, if relatively simple. > Having said that it's not that simple to write a hook, but I digress.. > some > artists choose to take the hook or a melody from an older classic, but > just > like you said 'wow' when you heard some older music with that familiar > riff > in and decide to investigate, well so it goes for modern examples too. > > Second, a lot of dance music is very good and not only 'nicks' hooks etc > from your beloved hirsute artistes, but also from the classical composers. > > Its horses for courses, sometimes I'm in a mood or place where trance > music > is cool, sometimes old school 80's, sometimes old school 70's, sometimes > modern guitar-led bands.
