I said automatic promotion, not 'improvement'. I know because Bates and Blackwell had both said that earlier this season, I am surprised you never picked up on it.
He sacked Blackwell for gross misconduct, ie blabbing to the media, although a cynic might say that was a convenient excuse to sack him then. In any case, like the rest of us he would have been expecting an improvement, however that doesnt necessarily mean automatic promotion. We could have improved and still 'only' ended up top 6, because the 3 sides who got relegated were either established prem sides with no financial difficulties, or sunderland who didnt spend much last season and therefore had/have the best part of £20mil burning a hole in their little pockets.
