Some of his team selections and formations I didn't personally agree with, and many managers would have done it differently, but I can see why he did it. Look at it this way, you have a job peeling potato spuds. You have a goal to peel 30 spuds an hour. If you drop below that you know you will get the sack. You think about it and decide to go for a plain old knife - its tried and trusted and you think it will work. So you start off and it seems to be ok, after 30mins you have peeled 20 spuds. You therefore KNOW that if you use the same old knife, you will definitely meet your goal. Half way through you were also given a new potato peeler device to use if you wanted. Now, would YOU just continue as you had with the tried and trusted knife, knowing you will meet your goal and keep your job. Or would you risk something new half way through unnecessarily? Thats how I see last season. The job was to get into the playoffs. The system by xmas was proving that this was entirely possible. Not forgetting the system (4-3-3 or 4-5-1) was in many ways forced onto him with the loss of Stone just before the season starts. In Jan he bought a right midfield player (Griffiths) and could have changed the system to his intended 4-2-2, but in my opinion he chose an entirely logical option to stick with the current system until the end of the season. This season he has to peel 60 spuds.
