It’s all the more amazing because it was the same players (save Doug) as the bad old days of last season. The difference, clearly and unambiguously, was the coaching. To call it “possession football” misses the point, as does calling it “attacking football.” It was possession with a purpose. It was fast, yes, but not so much speed of foot as speed of thought. There are questions for the future. Is the team fit enough to play this style for a whole season? How will the three additions who didn’t feature heavily in the game bed in with the team. Can Bamford play that style? But the players out there on Sunday certainly bought into what Bielsa was selling and as long as that happens this will be an enjoyable year. Michael A. Cooper and Klich playing like they never have before. Saiz at his best and everyone showing more desire and fitness than last season. Some of the squad shortcomings above may appear over the course of the season, but to put the promotion favourites to the sword is a great start, and with only one new player in the starting X1.
