Hi, I suggest you to find a way to have a different branch with it in the root directory.
if you can't there is always the --builddirectory dh switch (or similar, my memory is not so good). BTW look at e.g. python-pyqtgraph source code (debian). It teachs you the real way to build a python package. Half of the code you wrote is already handled by python tools, that does a better job that manually writing everything :-) Cheers, G.
