Mark, Switching the button is one of the directions I'm going in. I have to match the same push-button from the custom faceplate I have, although it looks pretty standard in size. I just need a double-pull, single throw...
The other direction I'm looking at is similar to some of the other suggestions about using a relay. I still have yet to find a relay circuit that uses a dry-contact closure to trigger it. Everyone one I found applies power to trigger the relay. Does anyone have any suggestions? FYI to all who suggested the 7775: I just opened a 7775 and found that the button activates two different circuits - one for the phone system and one for the external doorbell contact closure. Since it's mechanical, this presents a problem using anything custom. Plus, the Panasonic button is clear and fits over a diode to illuminate it. It's kind of clever, but the faceplates are tacky. Even the stainless ones. Not something I'd install in a multi-million dollar home! Maybe my designer can make better faceplates. But then we have to deal with the larger, custom opening in the wall rather than a single-gang outlet. It makes it trickier to install after the walls are up - not like using a single-gang cut-in box. So.... I only get a few of these doorbell clients, though. Once in a blue moon. Most can live without it. The truth is these are such large homes that you aren’t going to hear the doorbell unless you're right near the front door! But the client is always right, right? If you are using a custom face-plate the switch problem gets a lot easier. The main drawback is where to get the new switch. Try MarVac Electronics, Frys or (shudder) Radio Shack. But it's an idea? - Mark Marc wrote: > Oops!
