I would definitely take the bad battery out of the circuit, though. Otherwise, it may pull your new battery down.
Is the existing battery rechargeable? Many memory batteries are not, and need periodic replacement. If the existing battery is not rechargeable, you don't want to replace it with rechargeable batteries. When you measured the battery voltage, was it in or out of the circuit? That can make a huge difference in determining the problem. If the battery is rechargeable, you should check the battery connections with the battery removed to insure the system is properly supplying the recharging voltage. You will also need to be sure you use the same type of battery for replacement. That is, if the original is Nicad, you must use Nicad replacement, if it is NiMH, you must replace with NiMH, etc. The recharging circuits are different for the different types and may cause further damage or improper operation.
